Wealth and the Dilemma of Poverty Tourism

This Learning and Evaluation Situation (LES) helps students investigate an area of the world and learn about the nature and root causes of poverty. Students examine, research, and interpret wealth and poverty-specific contexts, to respond to the guiding question: “Can tourism to a poor, developing region be helpful and ethical?”

Pedagogical intention:

Students grasp wealth-related concepts and examine disparity in north-south relationships. Students research and identify causes of disparity and explain related causal connections. Students examine and interpret disparities in a region of their choosing. Students take a position on the practice of “poverty tourism” in the context of emerging and developing regions.
