War of 1812 – Effects of a Global War

This Learning and Evaluation Situation helps students explore the locations and reasons for the War of 1812. They will examine the experiences of Indigenous peoples, French Canadians, and other groups in closer detail while considering notions of territory, sovereignty, and nationalism.

Learning tasks and a final project idea allow students to respond to guiding questions like: “How did the experiences of the War of 1812 change how Canadians thought of themselves? And “How did the War of 1812 affect Indigenous peoples?”

Pedagogical intention:

Students explore the Napoleonic wars and their effects on North America. Students review key concepts and identify various causes of the War of 1812. Student timeline key events and reflect on Indigenous peoples' roles, actions, and claims. Students develop an opinion on how the War of 1812 ultimately contributed to Canada’s development of national and regional Identities. Students research and an represent Indigenous peoples' experience.
