Reclaiming Focus: How School Cell Phone Bans Enhance Learning and Wellbeing in Quebec

Starting Fall 2025, Quebec will implement a province-wide ban on cellphones and personal electronic devices in all public primary and secondary schools. This policy aims to improve student focus, wellbeing, and mental health by reducing distractions, digital dependency, and exposure to harmful online content. Research highlights links between excessive screen time and anxiety, depression, sleep loss, and reduced social skills. The ban is designed to foster better academic engagement, emotional stability, and healthier communication habits, supported by clear school policies and community involvement.

Pedagogical intention:

To highlight the importance of minimizing digital distractions in classrooms to promote deeper learning, emotional wellbeing, and social interaction, demonstrating how structured boundaries around technology use can support student development and healthier school environments.
