Civil Society – Actions that affect society

How do civil action affects contemporary society? In this Learning and Evaluation Situation (LES), students explore and investigate events that involve “civil society” reacting to or promoting significant economic, political, and social change (or lack of change) in recent historical periods.

Students respond to overarching questions like, How did civil society’s actions affect contemporary Québec? and to specific questions like, What are the changes or continuities in today’s society that relate to key examples of civil action in Québec?

Pedagogical intention:

Students examine forms of protest and means of influencing government. Students identify contexts for social change in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Students examine, classify, and situate key civil society movements during the contemporary period in Québec. Students consider additional perspectives (i.e., of Black Canadians) and examine how systematic problems like racism relate to other issues and actions.
