Parks Canada presents: A battle that would shape the face of today’s Canada

A network activity carried out in collaboration with Parks Canada: The Battle that Saved Montreal During the 1812 War. The intended audience is Elementary Cycle 2 and 3 (Grades 3-6) and Secondary (Grades 7-9) students.

Discover the daily life of a Canadian militiaman during the War of 1812 and learn how they, with the help of their Indigenous allies, succeeded in defeating the American troops who wanted to conquer Montreal.

Geographical and territorial issues, Lower Canada’s militia, military strategy, camp life… Discussion on a short but strategic battle, on the banks of the Châteauguay River, led by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles-Michel de Salaberry.

With the help of quizzes, historical objects and uniforms, students will have to guess what’s in the militiaman’s “knapsack”!

This interclass activity lasts 30 minutes, followed by a 15-minute question period.
